POITIER, Sidney (1924)
ABDIi sinema oyuncusu ve yönetmeni. Hollywood’un en ünlü zenci yıldızlarından biridir.
20 Şubat 1924’te Florida Eyaleti’nde Miami’de doğdu. Yoksul bir ailenin çocuğuydu. Bahama Adaları’nda büyüdü. On üç yaşında okulu bırakarak çeşitli işlerde çalıştı. New York’taki American Negro Theatre’a girerek sanat yaşamına başladı. 1946’da Broadway’de sahnelenen ve tümüyle zenci oyuncuların rol aldığı Lysistrata’&aki yorumuyla dikkati çekti. 1950’lerde Hollywood’un en önde gelen zenci yıldızı oldu. 1958’de Stanley Kramer’in yönettiği The Defiant Ones (Kader Bağlayınca) adlı filmiyle en iyi oyuncu olarak Oscar’a aday gösterildi ve Berlin Film Şenliği’nde de En İyi Erkek Oyuncu Ödülü’nü kazandı. Beş yıl sonra Lilies of the Field (“Çayırdaki Zambaklar”) filmiyle Oscar aldı. 1972’den sonra kendi oynadığı filmlerden bazısını yönetmeye başladı. 1997 Nisan’ında Japon Bahama’ları elçiliğiyle birlikte, UNESCO tarafından atandığı 1988’de Bahamalar elçiliği ve Walt Disney Company temsilciiliği görevlerini yürüttü.
Poitier değişik rollerin altından kolayca kalkan usta bir oyuncudur. Başarısı, zenci oyuncuların Holly-wood’a girmelerini kolaylaştırmıştır. Zenci sorunları ve ırk ayırımını ele alan İn the Heat of the Night (Gecenin Sıcağında), Guess Who’s Corning to Dinner (Beklenmeyen Misafir), Edge of The City (Kenar Mahalle) ve özellikle The Defiant Ones gibi filmleriyle Amerikan sinemasında bu konuya ilginin artmasında etkili olmuştur.
